Vertical Farming as a Tool for Sustainable Development is an environmental and educational initiative aimed at promoting innovative agricultural practices that contribute to sustainable food production, environmental protection, and climate resilience in North Macedonia. The project is implemented by the Civil Alliance for Development and is funded through the Environmental Investment Programme of the Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning of the Republic of North Macedonia. It responds to growing challenges such as land degradation, water scarcity, urbanization, and the increasing need for sustainable agricultural solutions that can support local communities and future generations.

The project introduces vertical farming as a modern approach to agriculture that enables food production in controlled environments while using significantly less land and water than traditional farming methods. Through awareness-raising activities, educational resources, practical workshops, and stakeholder engagement, the initiative seeks to increase public understanding of the environmental, economic, and social benefits of vertical farming.

A key component of the project is the development of a comprehensive digital guide that provides practical information on the design, implementation, and maintenance of vertical farming systems. In addition, research and analysis are conducted to assess the current state and future potential of vertical farming in North Macedonia, identifying opportunities for innovation and sustainable growth within the agricultural sector.

The project actively engages young people, farmers, entrepreneurs, educational institutions, municipalities, and local businesses through workshops, partnership-building activities, and awareness campaigns. Participants gain practical knowledge about sustainable agricultural technologies, resource efficiency, and environmentally responsible food production methods.

To further support knowledge sharing, the project develops digital educational materials, infographics, and short educational videos that explain the principles of vertical farming in a simple and accessible way. These resources are made available to the wider public, encouraging greater adoption of sustainable agricultural practices and inspiring young people to explore green entrepreneurship opportunities.

By strengthening cooperation between local communities, educational institutions, agricultural stakeholders, and public authorities, the project contributes to building a more sustainable and environmentally conscious agricultural sector. Through innovation, education, and collaboration, Vertical Farming as a Tool for Sustainable Development supports the transition toward greener communities, increased food security, and long-term environmental sustainability in North Macedonia.
