The SONDI project is an Erasmus+ Youth Participation initiative designed to strengthen civic engagement, democratic participation, and active citizenship among young people. The project creates opportunities for youth to better understand democratic processes while developing the confidence and skills needed to actively contribute to their communities. Through a combination of non-formal education, international cooperation, and intercultural exchange, SONDI encourages young people to become informed, responsible, and engaged citizens who can participate meaningfully in local, national, and European democratic life.
At the core of the project is the belief that young people should not only be informed about democracy but should also have practical opportunities to experience and influence it. Participants are introduced to democratic institutions, civic rights and responsibilities, youth participation mechanisms, and the importance of dialogue between citizens and decision-makers. Rather than relying solely on traditional classroom learning, the project uses interactive and participatory methods that encourage discussion, collaboration, and critical reflection. Workshops, simulations, group exercises, debates, and peer-learning activities provide participants with practical experiences that strengthen their understanding of civic engagement and democratic values.
A key feature of SONDI is its focus on transforming learning into action. Participants are encouraged to identify issues affecting young people in their local communities and to design initiatives that promote positive social change. By planning and implementing community-based activities, they gain practical experience in civic participation while building stronger connections with local stakeholders, public institutions, and civil society organizations. This hands-on approach reinforces the understanding that meaningful democratic participation extends beyond elections and includes everyday engagement through volunteering, advocacy, public consultation, and community initiatives.
The long-term objective of SONDI is to empower a new generation of active citizens who are equipped to contribute to democratic development and social cohesion within their communities. By fostering civic responsibility, intercultural understanding, and active participation, the project supports young people in becoming agents of positive change who continue to promote democratic values, encourage youth participation, and inspire others to become involved in shaping more inclusive and resilient societies.
