Sustainable Travel is an environmental education and awareness-raising project aimed at promoting responsible tourism practices and encouraging environmentally conscious travel behaviors among young people and local communities in North Macedonia. The project was implemented by the Civil Alliance for Development and funded through the Environmental Investment Programme of the Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning of the Republic of North Macedonia.

The initiative was developed in response to growing environmental challenges linked to tourism and transportation, including climate change, pollution, excessive resource consumption, and the need to preserve natural and cultural heritage. Recognizing the important role that young people play in shaping future travel trends, the project focused on empowering youth with the knowledge, skills, and motivation needed to become advocates for sustainable tourism and environmental responsibility.

Through research, educational materials, awareness campaigns, and interactive workshops, the project introduced participants to the principles of sustainable travel, eco-friendly tourism practices, climate-conscious decision-making, and responsible behavior while travelling. Educational resources, including infographics and a practical brochure, were developed to provide accessible information and practical guidance for travelers, tourism stakeholders, and local communities.

The project also fostered collaboration between schools, community centers, tourism businesses, tourism agencies, accommodation providers, and other relevant stakeholders. Through consultation meetings and partnership-building activities, the initiative encouraged the integration of sustainable practices within the tourism sector and promoted a shared commitment to environmental protection.

In addition to educating young people and the wider public, the project developed recommendations and an action plan aimed at supporting long-term sustainability efforts beyond the project’s duration. By strengthening awareness, encouraging responsible travel choices, and promoting cooperation among key actors, Sustainable Travel contributes to a more environmentally responsible tourism sector and supports broader efforts to address climate change and sustainable development challenges in North Macedonia.
